The Peak Hill Gold Mine, located 400km north-west of Sydney, occupies about 130ha of land within a larger exploration licence area of 40km².In 2007, Alkane discovered the Caloma deposit about 14km north of the Peak Hill Gold Mine below its Silurian sediments.

The site is in its third phase of major production having begun operations in the late 19th century before falling into a prolonged period of minor production. This mine was re-activated by Alkane Resources between 1996 and 2006, and in 2007 additional resources were discovered 24km north of the original site.
