According to estimation of the country's leading steel information provider this weekend, China is expected to own rights in more than 100 million tonnes of overseas iron ore assets next year.

The Beijing based Lange Steel Information Service said the estimation has included assets owned by Chinese firms following the purchase of China's Hunan Valin Iron and Steel Group in Australian mining company Fortescue Metals Group.

Hunan Valin purchase in Australia's third largest iron ore producer has been approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, but the deal still needs further approvals from the Ministry of Commerce and the State Administration of Foreign Exchange. The deal if secured would ensure a yearly iron ore supply of 10 million tonnes for Hunan Valin from FMG.

Lange said six Chinese steel producers, including Baosteel, Sinosteel and Hunan Valin have each secured rights in an annual supply of more than 10 million tonnes of overseas iron ore assets. It said another four producers have obtained a combined supply of 12 million tonnes of iron ore from overseas suppliers.

Mr Wang Guoqing a Lange analyst said about 80% of China's overseas iron ore supplies are in Australia which have been obtained through stake purchases, purchases of assets joint ventures and joint development.

China imported 443.56 million tonnes of iron ore in 2008, bringing the country's reliance on imported iron ore to around 50%.

The AuScope National Virtual Core Library (NVCL) is a research network that will offer users a detailed and high-resolution portrait of the composition and more specifically the mineralogy of the top 2km of the Australian continent.

Core libraries have existed for many years but they have not been used anywhere near this degree. The NVCL, which is part of the AuScope National GeoTransects Programme, has the goal of progressively building a novel high-resolution image bank of earth materials and properties - facilitating world-class geoscience research.

The NVCL will significantly increase the value of existing core libraries by scanning hundreds of thousands of core samples using Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)’s robotic, automated spectroscopic machines, called HyLoggers. It will then publish the detailed mineralogical data derived from that process.

Shares in the sector fell nearly 75% in 2008, and for many small companies stuck with scarce credit, high exploration costs and few products to sell, merging is a route to survival. Equity financing, once the junior miners' main source of funds, is no longer available after risk-averse investors fled the sector entirely or opted for the relative safety of beaten down blue-chip mining stocks according to Ernst & Young director of global mining Tim Williams.

"The logic of merging different companies together makes a lot of sense -- you put one company that's got money together with another that's got a good project but no money, and you might end up with an organisation that's more attractive to investors," Williams says.

"There are one or two companies with substantial cash positions who are now in a very strong position and could begin buying up assets at relatively cheap levels."

An example of the trend came on 25 March 2009 when zinc company Griffin Mining, which has over $60m in cash, said it planned to make an all cash offer for Canadian lead miner, Ivernia Inc. Research by Ernst & Young shows miners on London's Alternative Investment Market (AIM) at end-2008 were worth just a quarter of their £16bn value six months before.

AIM saw its last mining IPO in June 2008 and many companies are being forced to pull in their horns. Since a lifetime peak in March 2008, the AIM Basic Resources index has crashed 70%, underperforming a fall of almost 60% in the broader AIM index.

Smaller mining companies are vulnerable because they are often explorers, or early-stage mine developers. They lack products to sell and their assets tend to be lower-grade and higher-cost compared with those of big miners like Rio Tinto Plc.

While base metal prices have ticked up this year, they are still a long way off 2008 highs. Copper for instance is 56% off its all-time high hit in July 2008; nickel has plunged almost three quarters in the past year.

These tough conditions have created opportunities for the relatively strong according to Seymour Pierce mining and metals analyst Asa Bridle. "There are one or two companies with substantial cash positions who are now in a very strong position and could begin buying up assets at relatively cheap levels ," Bridle says.

Williams says not only does the joining of operations have its obvious benefits, but it can also open up funding possibilities. "The point about companies getting bigger is that there are economies of scale. They are likely to get more efficient, meaning that they would get on the radar screen of the larger institutional investors."

Securing a reliable and steady energy supply is an important concern for nations the world over. In April 2008, the last legal barrier to starting production was removed and ore began to be produced in October. Production for 2008 was between 25,000oz to 30,000oz, at an expected cost of between $365 and $385 an ounce.

The gold mine has an estimated 100 million ounces of deposits and an estimated mine life of between seven and eight years. From 2009 onwards it is expected to produce around 130,000oz per annum or between 500t of ore and 1,500t of development rock per day. Total costs on the mine during 2008 totalled about $27m. Proven and probable reserves equate to nearly two million tons at a grade of 15.46g/t.

The ore will be mined through three horizontal tunnels, called adits, through which equipment, personnel and rock will be transported in and out. These will measure 12ft×12ft and will penetrate the mountain by 1,000ft. Ore will be extracted through openings in the mountain that will later be filled in using a combination of cemented sand, gravel and development rock.

At the end of 2008 the mine and nearby milling operation at Kettle Falls had created 140 jobs with a further 40 expected to come on stream when the facility reaches full capacity, which will go some way to help the locality's unemployment rate which currently stands at approximately 8%. Plans to build two 300m high Narwas Residential Towers in Saudi Arabia's burgeoning city of Jeddah are moving ahead, despite officials putting the brakes on other projects. Keppel Land plan to begin constructing the towers in 2010 to fulfill a need for housing among upper and middle class citizens. The are two towers, each with three wings coming off a main core. Sky gardens will feature at various intervals as well as on the tops of the buildings. Construction should be completed by 2013 when the developers hope lots of new residents will move in to take advantage of the towers' water views and the incredible landscaped ground level.

Within a middle jurassic ignimbritic sequence at the Cerro Vanguardia Gold and Silver Mine, a fracture system hosts a swarm of epithermal, low-sulphidation veins of the sericite-andularia type. Veins are up to 10m thick, averaging 3.5m and dip from vertically to 60°. Detailed exploration established a resource base of 13Mt contained in 17 separate vein structures. A feasibility study defined 9.1Mt of open-pit mineable ore, grading 9.7g/t gold and 113g/t silver.

Total reserves at end-2005 attributable to Anglogold Ashanti were 6.0Mt grading 6.91g/t gold, equivalent to 41.8t of contained gold. Attributable measured, indicated and inferred resources totalled 32.6Mt at 3.14g/t gold, providing a further 102.2t of contained gold. In 2006, Cerro Vanguardia started a four-year exploration programme and started construction of a pilot plant for heap-leaching low-grade ore.

The annual production target was originally approx. 6t of gold and 60t of silver. During 2000, some 365,000 milled tonnes yielded 4,101kg of gold at a cash cost of $146/oz. Production fell to 193,000oz in 2002, recovered in 2003, and increased again in 2004. For 2005, AngloGold Ashanti reported its attributable 92.5% of production as 211,000oz, giving a total output of 228,100oz for the year at cash costs of US$171/oz and total production costs of US$277/oz.

Two 323m high towers designed by Foster and Partners, Tours Hermitage (Hermitage Towers for the non-baguette eaters) are planned for Paris' La Defense suburb.

Mineral-rich Bolivia has given miners a year to sign the new contracts giving the state a say in how their operations are run, but companies believe that the plan does not spell trouble for them.

BHP Billiton's Spence copper cathode project is located 1,700m above sea level in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, close to the mining town of Sierra Gorda, 50km south west of Calama and 150km north east of Antofagasta. Feasibility studies were completed in 2002 with mine approval granted in 2004.

It is one of the company's newer projects, with the first copper cathode extracted in 2006. The mine reached design capacity in the third quarter of 2007, after which it was able to reach the current annual production rate of 200,000t of copper cathode.

Spence is the first greenfield large-scale mining project to be developed in Chile in six years and the first large SX-EW (solvent extraction and electrowinning) project constructed globally this decade.

Commenting at the opening, BHP Billiton president base metals, Diego Hernandez said: "This is an outstanding asset that incorporates global best operating practice and the latest technology."

Construction of the mine was undertaken at a cost of around $1bn, with annual capex estimated at around $20m. Around 90% of the engineering was undertaken in Chile, and 99% of the management team is Chilean nationals.

The 210m Sahid Perdana Twin Towers in Jakarta, Indonesia will show their traditional form of art on through its design while still maintaining a modernistic feel.

Designed by Urbane, and expected to open in 2010, the elliptical towers will rise from a podium with a pod-shaped entrance. The glass facade will change as the towers rise, merging into a batik-like appearance at the top. The towers will be linked by a space-age looking skybridge.

The Jembayan thermal coal operation has been operating since 2004 with substantial year-on year ramp up. For the financial year ending December 2007, Jembayan produced 3.96Mt in 2007. It covers an area of over 12,000ha in East Kalimantan, Indonesia, some 150km north-west of Balikpapan and 80km from the sea.

Straits Resources subsidiary Straits Asia Resources (SAR) completed its acquisition of the mine in 2007 in a deal worth $350m, which was made up of $275m in cash and the issue of 75 million SAR shares to the vendors, representing 6.9% of Straits Asia's enlarged issued share capital.

Straits Resources says that the purchase of this multi-pit operation has added significant value and prospects to Straits Asia's investments in coal. Enthusiasm has been tempered, however, with the current global financial crisis leading to a shrinking of much needed investment capital according to publicly listed miner Energy Metals’ executive director Lindsay Dudfield.

"If we were still sitting in the financial environment we were in 2007, with the change in legislation there would have been a far more dramatic immediate effect," Dudfield says. The Perth-based company has a number of small uranium projects in WA which Dudfield says are progressing well. He adds that the reversal of the ban has encouraged the company to begin discussions with a number of traditional Aboriginal landowners.

Geita Mining Operations Improving Yearly Due to High Performance of Mining Equipment

Geita produced 327,000 oz of gold, equivalent to 6% of group production in 2007 thanks to their mining equipment. Operations at Geita are slowly improving yearly following the more than 50% fall in production for 2006 to 308,000 oz. Production for 2007 was 6% better at 327,000oz, while the average grade of ore processed increased from 1.68g/t in 2006 to 2.01g/t in 2007.

The Geita open pit gold mine is the biggest of AngloGold Ashanti's eight open-pit mines in Africa and is its only operation in Tanzania. It is 80km south-west of the town of Mwanza in the north-west of Tanzania.

Sebuku Coal Mine and Used Mining Equipment for Sale

This lengthy 19 kilometer (12 mi) long bridge will connect the German island of Fehmarn to the Lolland Danish island across the Fehmarn Strait located in the western Baltic Sea.

The bridge will replace the ferry and air traffic between the two countries reducing the cost of transport. Sea traffic will be possible underneath the bridge as the vertical clearance will be of 65 m (213 ft).

The design is a cable-stayed bridge with three 724 metres (2,375 ft) long spans, and four pillars about 280 metres (919 ft) tall. It will allow four road lanes and two rail tracks.

Comparable to the Øresund Bridge, the Great Belt Bridge or plans for the Strait of Messina Bridge, this will be the largest planned infrastructure project in Northern Europe. The route is the main connection between Hamburg, (Hamburg Metropolitan Region), and Copenhagen / Malmö, (Øresund Region); (in German: Vogelfluglinie, in Danish: fugleflugtslinjen) as well as further destinations in Scandinavia.

From the total $8.1 billion (€5.6 billion), Denmark will pay €4.8 billion. Germany will only have to pay for the connection between the bridge and its existing transport infrastructure. Denmark expects to be reimbursed for its expenses through user tolls as Denmark will be transformed into a transit country for neighbouring (Norway and Sweden) exports to Germany.

The Dystopian Farm designed by Eric Vergne was one of the finalists in the Evolo Skyscraper Competition and introduces a sustainable vertical farm for the people of New York City.

The design uses the idea of providing city residents with a sustainable food source in a building, integrating producers and consumers.

The biomorphic building is modeled after plant cells of ferns and provides space for farms, residential areas and markets. Airoponic watering, nutrient technology and controlled lighting are all a part of the design.

Mining Equipment: The Tritton Copper Mine

The Tritton underground ore deposit in Australia was found after the drilling of a geophysical anomaly. Mining of the orebody started in 2004 using excavators, loaders, and other mining equipment. Stope production began in March 2005.

Development of the new declines to access the ore started late 2007 and are scheduled to commence production of copper ore in late 2008. A strategic evaluation of the copper mining operations at Tritton during the first part of 2008 resulted in switching to another contractor. This change as well as low grade slopes and congestion resulted in a reduction of underground production levels through late March and April of 2008.

Straits projected that the expansion and new contractor will effect mine production of around 27,000 tonnes of copper in 2009 towards an average annual production of 35,000 tonnes for 10 more years.

Comprising a folded sequence of lower green schist facies, pelitic schists, mafic schists, shales, greywackes and with quartzites dipping shallowly towards the east, the principal minerals throughout the Tritton orebody are pyrite, chalcopyrite and quartz. Bornite is also present in the upper level of the orebody where some accessory tetrahedrite, digenite and chalcocite have also been observed mineralogically.

As of 2008, combing the Tritton Underground, Murrawombie and Tritton North Mines, Straits Resources reported proven reserves of 1,900kt with 5,800 in probable reserves.

Owned 100% by Straits Resources, the Tritton copper mine is located west-north-west of the town Nyngan, in central New South Wales, Australia. Mining within the Tritton areas commenced in 1992 at the Murrawombie open pit as part of the Girilambone copper mine and involved the mining of several copper oxide ore deposits using SX/EW processing. Open pit mining at Girilambone terminated in 1999, although copper production continued for two years. Australian miner Straits Resources in 2002 bought a huge stake in the mine, and eventually buying the minorities in Tritton Resources reaching full ownership in 2005.

BHP has identified areas to grow the Cerro Matoso nickel significantly, notably building a 3rd and 4th processing line and a low-cost leaching operation where they also see a growth in demand for mining equipment. Pending board approval, BHP envisages that these projects could see capacity more than doubling over the next ten years.

BHP Billiton’s Cerro Matoso nickel mining operation is located in Colombia combining a lateritic nickel ore deposit with a cheap ferronickel smelter. As the world’s second-largest producer of ferronickel it boasts as an operation with the lowest costs.

Nickel production in 2008 was 41,800 tons, which is 9,000 tons lower than 2007’s production due to an industrial stoppage during 2008. Costs were higher because of increased electricity and fuel expenses. The mine ore has an approximate reserve span of 42 years, based on current production levels.

BHP, the world's biggest miner, has been in disagreement with its local partner Asiaticus Management Corp over when to start commercial production at the Pujada nickel site in the southern Mindanao region, a debate that has reached the courts.

The Philippine group has accused the Anglo-Australian miner of moving too slowly in developing Pujada, estimated to have 200 million tonnes of nickel ore reserves with 1.3% nickel. Asiaticus had cancelled its joint venture agreement with BHP due to the dispute. In May 2008, the local firm obtained a ruling from a Philippine court barring BHP from the Pujada site, prompting the foreign miner to halt exploration activities.

"It is an option for one of them to buy the other out," Lito Atienza, the minister in charge of the mining sector, told Reuters in a telephone interview.

BHP could buy out Asiaticus' 60% stake in the project or Asiaticus, controlled by Filipino businessman Peter Tan, could purchase BHP's 40% interest, said Atienza.

But the first option is for both companies to resolve their disagreement. "Both should come on the table with clear and clean intentions, that's what I'm asking from them," said Atienza.
